Lewis Clinic and School, NJ, Princeton

http://www.lewisschool.org//  Children who fall through the cracks elsewhere have been discovered at The Lewis Clinic and School to be bright, fully capable persons of ability, talent, and untapped promise.  Ironically, as the neuro-scientific research of recent years has corroborated, the different environments and organization of the brain that result in dyslexia, ADD, or related, atypical styles of learning may also be responsible for the skills of three-dimensional thinking and invention apparent in the artistic, musical, creative, and athletic ability of so many of our students.
The Lewis School has always recognized, valued, and developed the intelligence and creative strengths of its bright, learning-different students.  The idea of Multiple Intelligences is an underlying, fundamental principle of a Lewis School education.  The many dynamic expressions of intelligence were suggested in the early research of Norman Geschwind, Richard Masland, Bruce Pennington, and by the studies of educational experts in the neurosciences like Martha Denckla, et al.  The research of these pioneering experts has been corroborated and expanded in the more recent work of Howard Gardner, Joseph Renzulli, Dee Dickerson, and Linda and Bruce Campbell. By creating a teaching environment that removes major obstacles to learning, students close the gap between their achievement and their potential.

Why is this unique program needed? The human brain is an incredible piece of machinery. In 65% of human brains, the left hemisphere is larger than the right hemisphere. In the brains of people with reading, writing and language struggles, a high percentage show either a larger right hemisphere or equality in both regions. Many times the larger right hemisphere is highly specialized, and therefore the person has great gifts and creative abilities. The person having this trouble with language is often diagnosed with dyslexia. In order for a student with dyslexia to learn to read and process language, several learning pathways must be established and reinforced through multi-sensory instruction.
The Key School curriculum is unique to Western North Carolina. It is anchored in multi-sensory language instruction which is individualized and combines auditory, visual, and tactile/kinesthetic pathways to learning. It teaches the structure of language and the tools to put sounds together to spell words and to take them apart to read. Grades 1st- 8th

Triad Academy was created to address the unmet academic needs of bright children who learn differently. Students work in an individualized, small group setting where the academic curriculum provides opportunities for each child to be challenged and excel. Teachers use a variety of research-validated, language based, and multi sensory teaching methods based on the Orton-Gillingham approach to language remediation.
Our goal is to return students to a traditional classroom setting, when appropriate, with an understanding of the way he or she learns best, and the skills and compensatory strategies to be a successful, independent learner.

Marburn Academy, Columbus, OH

http://www.marburnacademy.org// Although many students come to Marburn Academy with a “learning disability” label, we reject the concept they are “disabled” from learning. Children who have struggled to achieve in school because of a learning difference require a highly effective skill remediation program, but they also deserve challenging academics and stimulating opportunities to develop their interests and talents. Marburn Academy is the only K-12 school in Central Ohio with an academic and extra-curricular program that is designed to address the full range of these unique learning and personal development needs of bright children with learning differences such as dyslexia and ADHD.
