Lake Michigan Academy, Grand Rapids, Michigan
http://www.wmldf.org// Lake Michigan Academy is a non-profit school for children with learning differences in grades 1 through 12. Our success rate has proven that alternatives are available for students who are unable to learn in a traditional school environment. With the cooperation and assistance of families, professionals and other concerned individuals, quality education can be provided for all children, regardless of their learning differences.
Lake Michigan Academy uses a variety of techniques to address the multi-faceted needs of our students. For example, we often use an adaptation of the Orton-Gillingham alphabetic phonetic approach. This is a synthetic system that teaches the decoding of words. Guest speakers, field trips, individualized coursework and computer software are also used. Teachers consistently present information in a multi-sensory manner appealing to visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities of learning in an attempt to match individual learning styles. MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES – Our approach to education
In our classrooms, we emphasize deep understanding of varying concepts through experience-based learning while employing the Multiple Intelligences pedagogy developed by Howard Gardner. There is a constant flow of new information on how the human brain operates, how it differs in function between genders, how emotions impact intellectual acuity, even on how genetics and environment each impact our children’s cognitive abilities. While each area of study has its merits, Howard Gardner of Harvard University identified different KINDS of intelligence we possess. K-8th
